The idea that the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in Nigeria should establish and own a university dates back to the early 2000s. For well over a decade, this ambition played on the minds of successive leaders, but without any serious commitment, the lofty idea paled intothe shadows behind other pressing needs and projects until the University Committee, constitutedby the National Chairman, Dr Collins Ugwu, and headed by Professor Fabian A. Ehikhamenor, commenced work in 2019. At the inaugural meeting of 29thJanuary 2019,the Committee decided that the Renewal did not have the capacity to establish a university at the time. The option of a technical school was considered; but after evaluating the feasibility and trade-offs of such an institution, the University Committee settled for a conventional secondary school, with the possibility of adding a technical/vocational component three years later. With the approval by the NEC/NSCof this proposal and the recommendation to redesignate the University Committee as Education Committee, work on the infrastructural requirements involving modification and partitioning of existing buildings and those under construction, began. The ecclesiastical provinces were to build their hostels and these were expected to be available for accommodating students during academic session.
By November 2019, theEducation Committee had articulated the cost estimates for the take-off of the proposed Secondary School with the target date of September 2020.Unfortunately, funds were not available; and then, early in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic broke out and began to ravage the world. Consequently, the development of the Centre was stalled and the provinces that were relied on for hostels accommodation were unable to make further progress. To complicate matters, the unprecedented level of insecurity in the country at the time stirred up genuine concerns. The first target of September 2020 for the commencement of the school proved infeasible. The next two years witnessed some progress, against all odds. At the beginning of the tenure of Brother Uche Manu as the National Chairman, the Education Committee was redesignated as Education Commission, and with his strong support and unflinching belief that the project was feasible, as well as the commitment and hard work of the Local Organising Committee led by Brother Benedict Chukwudi, all the essential structural and administrative facilities were put in place. The NSC must be commended for its unallowed support for the project. The Archdiocesan and Diocesan Chairmen renderedimmeasurable assistance in the advertisement for admission, distribution and sales of admission form, and in the administration of the entrance examination.
After several years of gestation, Charisma International College, a co-educational, boarding, secondary school, owned by the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in Nigeria (CCRN), finally commenced academic work in September 2023 in a serene expanse of land of the National Service Centre of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in Nigeria, located at Ubulu,Uku, Delta State of Nigeria, beginning with 12 students nine members of staff, including six academic and three non-academic..The College has as its vision the development of leaders of impeccable character who are committed to the service of God and humanity, with a profound sense of social justice, founded on the love of God.
